2022 NFL Thanksgiving Schedule: Rare Cowboys vs. Giants Showdown Headlines Interesting Slate

Perhaps the only thing that is more synonymous with Thanksgiving than football is turkey. As our fans, it’s an annual tradition to play three games on Thanksgiving instead of one or two. (At least since 2006.)

Of course, everyone knows that the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys each host their Thanksgiving counterparts. Detroit plays early and Dallas plays mid-afternoon EST. In recent seasons there have also been prime time competitions as football cannot be fully enjoyed.

With the league announcing the full schedule for 2022, you now know which six teams will play on Thanksgiving. We got our hands on an exciting slate and you won’t want to miss a moment of action. Here is a preview of the three games.

The NFL has been hosting a Thanksgiving game every year since 1920, with the exception of four years in the early 1940s. Lions are the wealthiest in the Thanksgiving tradition and have been an annual participant since 1934. Detroit is 37-43-2. They won 82 Thanksgiving games but lost five straight after beating division rivals Vikings (more on that later) in 2016.

It’s the third time in the past four years that the Bills have performed on Thanksgiving Day two in a row. They defeated the Saints 31-6 in last year’s nightcap, and in 2019 defeated the Cowboys during Josh Allen’s second season as a starter. They hadn’t played on Thanksgiving in 25 years before. Buffalo is 0-2 against Detroit in the Thanksgiving game they lost to the Lions in 1994 and 1976. Prior to that, the Bills had collected a 4-2 Thanksgiving record against the (St. Louis) Cardinals and (Oakland) Raiders. , (San Diego) Chargers, (New York) Titans.

The game will provide a tough test of the defense of Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions as Allen guides them through one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses. It will be difficult for Jared Goff and Co. to catch up with them, assuming the Bills are scoring as often as in recent seasons.

The Cowboys have been their second regular Thanksgiving Day contestant since 1966. All but two Thanksgivings have included games featuring both lions and cowboys since Dallas was included. Dallas are 31–22–1 in their Thanksgiving games, most recently losing to the Raiders last year.

This game is the record for the Cowboys having played six consecutive matches against an opponent in the division when broadcast by Fox. They had previously played three games against Washington and one against the Eagles. Dallas and New York met only once, on Thanksgiving Day, in 1992. (The Cowboys won the game 30-3.) This is a very rare case for Big Blue, as the Giants have only played three times on Thanksgiving since 1938.

The game is going to be an interesting game with a new regime in charge of the Giants who haven’t had much success against their division rivals the Cowboys in recent years. Dallas have won nine of their last 10 games between the two teams, with the only win being when Dak Prescott missed due to an injury. The Giants haven’t defeated the Prescott-led Cowboys team since his rookie season when the Giants dealt two of their three regular season losses to the Cowboys.

The NFL added prime time games to its 2006 Thanksgiving schedule. Since 2006 there has been an annual Thanksgiving prime-time match, and the tradition resumed when the Bills took over the Saints last season until the Steelers-Ravens match was postponed due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

New England have played five Thanksgiving games in team history, not since the Patriots defeated the Jets 49-19 during prime time in 2012. The Pats have a 3-2 record in all Thanksgiving games, all 3-1 in the Bill Belichick era. (They lost to the Cowboys in 1984.)

Minnesota has made eight appearances on Thanksgiving, most recently in 2017, when the Vikings avenged their Thanksgiving defeat against the Lions over the previous year. The Vikes are 6-2 overall on Thanksgiving, but this is their first time playing against a team other than the Lions or Cowboys. (Minnesota went 3-2 against Detroit and 3-0 against Dallas in that game, most notably in Randy Moss’s 3-touchdown blast against the Cowboys team that surpassed him in the 1998 NFL Draft. )

The Vikings are on a five-game losing streak against the Patriots and haven’t defeated them since Belichick’s first season at the helm of the franchise.
