Hundreds of civilians remain imprisoned in the midst of a life-threatening battle at the ironworks in Mariupol. Civilian rescue operations are underway after the successful evacuation of more than 400 civilians last week.
“It’s a very difficult and risky operation,” said Chris Hanger, spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“It’s an active conflict,” he said. “The path can be dangerous. There may be active battles going on in the surrounding area.”
Although the battle continues at Mariupol, the Russian offensive has already shifted from the coastal city. A US official told CBS News that about 10,000 troops advanced north, part of the advance engulfing villages in their path.
One of them is Azov, located north of Mariupol. The Malnychenko family told CBS News that they risked their lives to escape.
After surviving Bucha’s massacre, Yuka Malnichenko begged her family to escape from the south.
“I was just saying, ‘Please, get out of there. Please, just go!'” said Malnychenko.
She smiled and hugged her brother and said that the family was now reunited.
Despite continued Russian onslaught, Ukrainian forces remain on the defensive line. However, there is additional US intelligence suggesting that Russia will try to force the annexation of the southern city of Kherson with the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in the coming weeks.
