Alisson’s clever tactics prevented Edouard Mendy from repeating a penalty shootout prank in the FA Cup final.

Alisson passed the ball to each Liverpool teammate to prevent Edouard Mendy from playing a mind game in the FA Cup final penalty shootout.

Alisson showed a great save, rejecting Mason Mount on penalties before Kostas Tsimikas beat Liverpool 6-5.

The Carabao Cup final was repeated earlier this season when Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties after a goalless penalty shootout.

Throughout Saturday’s penalty shoot-out, Alisson retrieved the ball from every Chelsea penalty and passed it on to his Liverpool team-mate taking the next spot kick.

This prevented Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy from attempting a psychological fight with opposing penalty takers, as he did in Senegal’s penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final in February.

During that particular penalty shootout, Mendy had to take the time to hand the ball directly to the Egyptian players before returning to the line.

The tactic worked as Senegal won 4-2 on penalties. Liverpool forward Sadio Mane scores in a penalty shootout.

Mendy was unable to try the same tactic at Wembley due to Alisson’s actions and Mane was the only Liverpool player to miss a penalty on penalties.

In his post-victory speech, Alisson told the BBC:

“It’s a pity we didn’t score. It was a decent fight, we kept a clean sheet and after that the boys scored incredible goals. I just had to save one last goal.

“I’m really happy. Me and Mendy made some amazing saves. I wouldn’t have been able to save without the team’s help.

“They work well and make it easier for me.”

Alisson now has won the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and Carabao Cup in just four seasons at Anfield with Liverpool.

He can finish the season with more silverware. Liverpool are three points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with two matches remaining in the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s team will also face Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris on 28 May.
