Anaheim mayor resigns over corruption investigation into his role in the sale of Angel Stadium land

Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu resigned Monday during a federal public corruption investigation involving the $320 million sale of Angel Stadium and allegations that a secret “cabin” of power brokers had control over city politics. .

Sidhu’s attorney Paul Meyer said in a statement that the mayor has denied wrongdoing and has decided to resign “to continue acting in the best interests of Anaheim and to allow this great city to move forward unhindered.”

The resignation comes into effect on Tuesday after six other members of the Anaheim City Council have called for Sidou’s resignation.

In an affidavit in support of a federal search warrant targeting Sidu earlier this month, FBI special agent Brian Adkins claimed that the mayor had given the Angels classified information on at least two occasions while negotiating with the team about the sale of the Angel Stadium. One million dollar campaign donation from the team.

Affidavits that show the FBI suspects the mayor of bribery, fraud, obstruction of justice and manipulation of witnesses also allege that he interfered with the Orange County grand jury’s investigation into the deal. Sidhu was not charged.

Meyer countered the allegations in a statement. “Through a fair and thorough investigation, [Sidhu] No confidential information was leaked for future political campaign donations. … No private session material or confidential information was disclosed by Mayor Sidhu. The government affidavit confirms that Harry never solicited a donation to a political campaign that was in any way linked to the negotiation process.”

Republican Sidou, who was elected mayor in November 2018, ran for re-election in November.
