Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is said to be interested in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimchen.
With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketia due to leave this summer, Arsenal desperately need a new scorer and are in a position not seen with the Emirates since Robin van Persie left for Manchester United in 2012.
The recent talk of Arsenal’s new number 9 revolves around current Manchester City and Brazil national team gunslinger Gabriel Jesus. However, recent developments have shown that Naples and Nigerian finisher Osimhen has a great interest in Arteta.
The 23-year-old Nigerian international, who has scored 18 goals in 32 games for Napoli this season, is rumored to have sent his agent to London last week to negotiate with Arsenal. According to Calico MercatoDisappointed by their recent Champions League failure, the Gunners offered €90m, which Napoli turned down.
Negotiations with Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis are notoriously troublesome. The Arsenal board is on the lookout for something, perhaps giving reasons why the North London giants appear to be pursuing both Jesus and Osimchen. Who will be Arsenal’s number one target remains to be seen. But if the story of this 90 million euro offer is true, we’d assume Osimhen was the man.
Needless to say, Arsenal should sign a striker this summer. From Ian Wright to Thierry Henry to Robin van Persie, Arsenal has some of the best strikers to light up European football. If they want to return to the high positions they once dominated in English football, they should do it right this summer. Osimhen may be the one they need to take them there.
