MEXICO CITY — At least 11 people have been killed and several others have been injured when more than 10 gunmen opened fire at two bars and hotels in central Mexico’s Celaya district late Monday, local media said.
Mexican daily El Universal reported that about 15 gunmen took part in the gang attack in the devastated state of Guanajuato, leaving at least five injured.
According to the newspaper, the attackers threw Molotov cocktails during the attack.
News website Sin Embargo reported that a cardboard box with a message that appeared to have been written by a drug cartel was found at the scene.
Local authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Guanajuato has become one of Mexico’s most violent neighborhoods in recent years as drug gangs fight for control.
