After a three-game losing streak at light heavyweight, Ryoto Machida returned to the middleweight division at Bellator 281 to try to breathe new life into his career. But Fabian Edwards had other ideas. Questions about Machida’s future in sports.

Machida’s awkward karate style has puzzled many opponents throughout his career, but Edwards entered the fight with a game plan based on consistently attacking Machida. Machida didn’t look comfortable under the pressure, and Edwards took advantage by throwing heavy elbows during breaks whenever both clinched.

That elbow will be central to the closing sequence as Edwards landed an elbow that definitely rocked Machida. Edwards dashed forward, hitting more punches, dropping Machida and ending the game by throwing two more bombs on the ground that coldly knocked down the former UFC champ.

“The Edwards brothers are known for their elbows,” said Edwards, brother of UFC best contender Leon Edwards. “He should have known I was going to break him with my elbow.”

Machida is now on a four-game losing streak and will have to go back to the drawing board to figure out the right division if they decide to continue competing.

Edwards raised his career record to 9-2 with a 2-1 record.
