Chinese building collapse kills 53, finds end of trap

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media reported that 53 people were killed and 10 people were rescued in a building collapse in central China a week ago. Authorities said Friday that the search for people trapped in the collapse had ended.

The last survivor was rescued shortly after midnight on Thursday, 5.5 days after the sudden collapse of residential and commercial buildings in Changsha on April 29.

At least nine people have been arrested for ignoring building codes or other violations related to the collapse of the building.

All survivors were reported to be in good condition after receiving treatment at the hospital.

The arrests are five including the owner of the building, three people in charge of design and construction, and false safety assessments of the guesthouses on the 4th and 6th floors of the building.
