Comedian Dave Chappelle’s alma mater honors him by renaming the building in his honor.
His honor came months after he was booed by students on campus amid a transgender controversy.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Dave Chappelle was honored at her alma mater after being ridiculed at her school.
Dave Chappelle’s alma mater, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, will be renaming the theater after the comedian.
The institution noted that it pays tribute to the most prominent alumni for his ‘continuous dedication and service to the school’.
Chappelle was criticized after making comments about transgender people while filming the Netflix comedy special ‘Closer’ last year.
One of his remarks was that ‘gender is a fact’ that caused the trans community to blow up his comedy special.
Moreover, the controversial show caused a lot of controversy on social media, including protests from Netflix staff.
Students weren’t too impressed when Chappelle’s former school announced it had decided to rename the theater in honor of its famous graduate.
Nevertheless, Chappelle was not discouraged by it. He started a fundraising challenge. He asked his supporters and opponents to raise money for the school.
The 48-year-old also argued that he would sincerely give up the honor of building a building named after him if his opponents raised more money.
As the results came out, Chapelle’s supporters raised more money. Therefore, the building will soon be called Dave Chappelle Theatre.
Students mock Dave Chappelle.
Dave Chappelle visited her old school in November 2021 while heating up with a joke about the transgender community.
The Politico Playbook reported that at a rally of about 580 students, a member spoke out describing Chapelle as a narrow-minded person. The same student added, ‘I’m 16 and you seem childish’.
The stand-up comedian replied to the student, ‘I don’t think you can make one of the decisions I have to make on any given day.’
However, the statement disappoints some students who had expected Chapelle’s apology.
Another student said, ‘Your comedy kills’.
Chappelle says ‘N****s are getting killed every day. The press isn’t here, is it?’
Additionally, students protested last fall to overturn the facility’s decision.
