Dwayne Johnson reveals why he wanted a standalone film for Black Adam

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson recently sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair on Thursday.

During the session, Johnson admitted that he persuaded Warner Bros to introduce Black Adam’s character in a separate film.

Moving from a wrestler to an actor, he said, ‘When the first drafts of the film came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam. There are two origin stories in one film. Now that was the goal. So it wasn’t entirely surprising.’

He continued, “But after reading it, I had a gut feeling, ‘You can’t make this movie like this. We’re going to do incredible harm to Black Adam.”

The 50-year-old businessman said, ‘It would be nice if Shazam had two origin stories in one movie, but not for Black Adam’.

Johnson added that he called studio management to express his concerns. He argued that introducing both characters in the same movie is not the best idea for both characters.

Jumanji Star said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here’. It’s not popular’ and everyone thought, ‘Hey, this script is the best, let’s make this movie’. I really think that ‘Shazam!’ should make a movie with the tone you want. And I think we need to separate this too.’

Besides, Shazam! It hit the big screen in 2018.

More about Black Adam’s Independent Film

Dwayne Johnson eventually made his wish come true as the movie Black Adam is in post-production. Jaume Collet-Serra will serve as the Board of Directors.

Reportedly, the film will also feature Viola Davis, Sarah Shahi, Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge and Noah Centineo.

Collet-Serra told Vanity Fair that the upcoming movie won’t be ‘the classic superhero movie’.

The film immediately jumps to the introduction of Black Adam and we will gradually learn more about what happened to make him the villain.

The film will be released in theaters on October 21, 2022.

However, Johnson’s Black Adam and Zachary Levi’s Shazam will likely intersect in future films. Plus, Shazam’s sequel, Shazam! Wrath of God will probably release later this year.
