How did Ajax buy Frankie de Jong for just €1 in a ‘decade deal’ with Manchester United moving to ‘close’?

Ajax were able to sign Frenkie de Jong in 2015 for just €1 and there is a good reason to call it the greatest deal of all time.

The Dutch giant has always been a hotbed of young and exciting talent, and in recent memory no player has captured it as much as de Jong.

It’s surprising to think that Ajax secured services from Willem II at the age of 18 for the price of a bag of sweets in the store.

OK, it took a little longer than that, but from their point of view it’s still crazy business.

Ajax agreed to loan a few players to Willem II after failing to agree on the terms of a €800,000 contract and decided to give them a percentage of de Jong’s future transfer fee.

In 2019, the midfielder will switch Amsterdam to Catalonia and join Barcelona for a whopping 75 million euros.

Willem II earned 7.5 million euros. It’s still a very small amount considering the talent de Jong has.

Gerard Romero reported on Wednesday evening that a €80M transfer was ‘95% confirmed’ with Blaugrana still facing financial troubles.

They are believed to have to sell one key player before bringing in their own reinforcements.

United confirmed 10 Hags as new managers last month, and he is set to take over Summer.

In the Under-10 match at the Amsterdam Arena, de Jong won the Eredivisie and reached the 2019 Champions League semi-finals, beating Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.

United are expected to sign the midfielder, Nemanja Matic has already confirmed his move at the end of the season and Paul Pogba is unlikely to sign a new contract.
