India’s late notice on Friday banned wheat exports with immediate effect as the world’s second-largest wheat producer seeks to stabilize local prices, the government said.

The government said it would allow wheat shipments on letters of credit already issued.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February, exports to the Black Sea region plummeted, leaving global buyers turning to India for wheat supplies.
