Lea Michelle is the next Funny Girl on Broadway. Replacing Beanie Feldstein for the coveted role of Fanny Brice is expected, or at least widely suspected. Jane Lynch drops production and Tovah Feldshuh takes on the role of Mrs. Brice.
Will Beanie Feldstein replace Lea Michele?
The cast of Funny Girls will be joined by Lea Michele and Feldshuh (Yentl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), best known for Broadway’s Glee and Spring Awakening, at the August Wilson Theater starting September 6th. Tony nominees Jared Grimes and Ramin Karimloo will continue playing Eddie Ryan and Nick Arnstein respectively. Today, the production team revealed the casting.

Lea Michele said in a post on her Instagram that a dream had come true. “It feels more than blessed to be part of this incredible cast and production and to make my Broadway stage debut as Fanny Brice,” she said. Feldstein’s successor, Julie Benko, will star in the lead roles from September 8 to Thursday and from Tuesday, August 2 to Sunday, September 4, respectively.

Lynch will continue to be Mrs. The role of Brice is taken over and she leaves her role earlier than expected. She was originally due to leave at the end of September, but now she will be leaving with Feldstein, leaving little time for former Glee co-star Michele to appear. Feldstein unexpectedly announced last night that she would be leaving the show on July 31, two months earlier than her scheduled September 25 departure date. Recently, Feldstein has been absent from quite a few concerts, at least in part because of the Covid-19. Feldstein said in an Instagram post last night that he had decided to step down at the end of July “after the producers decided to take the show the other way.” She did not comment further on the new direction, and the producers did not comment on anything.
