‘Multiple people’ shooting in New York supermarket

At least 10 people were killed in a Saturday afternoon shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, a police official told The Associated Press.

Details about the number and circumstances of the additional people who shot at Tops Friendly Market were not immediately provided. Buffalo police said early Saturday afternoon that an unidentified shooting suspect was in custody.

The two officials were not allowed to speak publicly on the matter and did so on condition of anonymity.

Police officials and a spokesperson for the supermarket chain did not immediately respond to a message from the Associated Press requesting comment.

The shooter entered the supermarket with a gun and opened fire, one of the officials said. Investigators are investigating whether the man believed the shooting was live-streamed and posted a statement online, officials said.

The official warned that the investigation is in its infancy and that authorities are looking into whether the shooting was of racial motive, although a clear motive has not yet been identified.

The supermarket is located in the Black District about 3 miles north of downtown Buffalo. The surrounding area is mainly residential and there is a Family Dollar shop and a fire station near the shops.

Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, both 20 years old, pulled into a parking lot as the shooter left. They portrayed him as a man in his late teens or early twenties disguised as a man wearing what appeared to be a black helmet and rifle.

“He was standing with a gun to his chin. What’s up? Why is this kid pointing a gun at his face?” Kepart said. He knelt down on his knees. “He took off his helmet, dropped his gun and was tackled by the police.”

Police closed blocks lined with spectators and yellow police tape wrapped around the entire parking lot. Mayor Byron Brown was on the scene late Saturday afternoon and was due to speak to the press.

Governor Kathy Hochul Tweet She said she was “closely monitoring the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo,” her hometown. She said state officials provided assistance to local authorities.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said via social media it had ordered all available staff to assist the Buffalo Police Department.

The shooting occurred a little more than a year after the March 2021 attack in Boulder, Colorado, where 10 people were killed at a King Super Grocery Store. Investigators have not released information on why they believe the suspect in the attack targeted the supermarket.
