Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving could lose a major sponsorship deal with sportswear company Nike after the 2022/2023 NBA season finals.
Irving was already having a turbulent season, missing most of the regular season’s games before re-entering the court.
Basketball players remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, unable to hit the nets at home games. He has missed 29 games this season due to the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
The Nets then lost to the Boston Celtics in four games of the opening round of the NBA playoffs.
To wrap up Irving’s up/down season, he will not extend his sponsorship contract with Nike beyond the expiration of his current contract, which ends in 2023.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Kyrie Irving’s Nike deal
Last Friday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Nike were skeptical of a new contract with professional basketball star Kyrie Irving. The contract expires in 2023 next year.
ESPN has contacted Nike to identify ongoing speculation. However, the agency tactfully responded to the rumor without denying or agreeing to it.
“We do not comment on contracts, rumors or speculation,” a Nike spokesperson told the media.
They also added that ‘Kyri remains a Nike athlete’.
Kyrie Irving joined the sportswear giant in 2014. His basketball shoes have become one of the most popular brands.
Last July 2021, a talented but capricious athlete criticized the design of the Kyrie 8 sneakers. He claimed that he was not involved in designing or marketing the product.
As a result, just days later, he tried to withdraw his comments after Nike made comments about the riot. However, damage was done and his words had limited effect.
A new pair of shoes from the Irving line will debut this fall. This will be his last shoe in a partnership with Nike. His transaction is said to be worth $11 million.
What is Kyrie Irving’s Net Contract Worth?
According to the report of sports lock., Kyrie Irving made $34.9 million in the 2021/22 season. Salary increased gradually to $36.5 million in the 2022/23 campaign.
Irving is said to have signed a four-year contract with the Nets in 2019 worth $136.4 million. It ends at the end of the 2023 season.
