PITTSBURGH (AP) — Albert Pujols hit two home runs and caught a warm-up toss as star catcher Yadier Molina made her first pitch to finish the St. Louis Cardinals’ 18-4 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Molina conceded two home runs and four runs in the ninth, eventually completing a three-game sweep for the Cardinals.
But for St. Louis, fun and games weren’t everything. Starting pitcher Steven Matz only held four pitches before his left shoulder was pulled stiff.
Pujols increased his career home run count to 683. In episode 5, St. With Louis winning 11-0, Pujols started the 425-foot drive from the left field rotunda.
The 42-year-old long hitter added a three-run home run in the ninth after beating Pirates infielder Josh VanMeter in the ninth. Pujols is fifth on the all-time home run list and behind Alex Rodriguez (4th) with 13, and 32 at PNC Park for the most home runs of any opponent.
Exactly a week after Pujols went on the mound for the first time in their big league career, Molina moved to St. They took an 18-0 lead over Louis. Pujols was behind the plate to warm up a longtime teammate between innings.
When it comes to catching the ball, the perennial all-star and gold glover, 39-year-old Molina, hasn’t been as good as throwing the ball. He gave up a solo home run to Tsutsugo Yoshi and a three-run RBI to Jack Suwinski.
Overall, Molina threw 14 of 20 pitches for strikes without striking out or walking, allowing four hits in one inning. Pujols allowed four runs and two home runs in one inning while beating San Francisco last Sunday night.
After Matz sent off, Angel Rondón (1-0) went in to strike out Ke’Bryan Hayes with his first pitch. Rondon allowed only one hit in five innings and won his first major championship.
After being recalled from the pre-match taxi team, Rondón made his third major league appearance for the first time since June 12, 2021.
The highly regarded prospect Nolan Gorman doubled in the first and the Cardinals took the lead with his first major league RBI. He had three hits, five ten hits and two doubles in his first major league series.
Tommy Edman also hit 3 of the Cardinals’ 20 hits. He hit two doubles and helped score 6-2 against Bryce Wilson (0-3).
Harrison Bader made his first major league pitching appearance and hit a home run against Banmeter, who allowed five runs in the ninth. A usual second baseman and outfielder, VanMeter was the first to assume his duty as a catcher in an emergency.
Cardinals LHP Matthew Riveratore selected for Triple-A Memphis. In his major league debut on Saturday, he gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Pirates SS Kevin Newman suffered setbacks while rehabilitating a left groin injury for Triple-A Indianapolis. “The new injury is in the hamstrings,” said Ben Cherington.

Cardinals: RHP Miles Mikolas (3-2, 1.68) is on Monday at St. Louis will take the home mound in the first of two games against the Toronto Blue Jays. Michaelas has not allowed more than two runs in eight starts this season.
Pirates: RHP JT Brubaker (0-4, 5.50) is expected to start in the first of a three-game set against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. His most recent win was on August 24 last season.
