The 23-year-old looked destined to leave the Parc des Princes to head to the Bernabéu as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired next month.
Foot Mercato Journalist Santi Auna Madrid claims to have promised Mbappe the number 10 jersey at the Bernabeu, now worn by Modric and previously owned by people like Ferenc Puskas, Luis Figo and Clarence Seedorf.
The 36-year-old Modric is expected to sign a new contract with the Spanish champion, although his contract expires at the end of the season.
And fans are upset at the news that he may have had to give up his shirt number to accommodate Mbappe.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “With mad respect for one of the greatest players in Real’s history.”
“Rude lmao,” another added.
Mbappe is expected to make an official announcement on Sunday, but has not yet confirmed if he will really remain at PSG.
Crazy disrespect for one of the greatest players to ever play for Real.
