But a few years later, the iPod became a symbol of cultural influence and status, changing the music industry as we knew it. Apple has released other models including the Mini, Shuffle and Nano. By 2006, iPod sales accounted for approximately 40% of Apple’s revenue.

Jobs touted the device’s “unbelievable” thickness and built-in Wi-Fi. The iPod Touch also had the same 3.5-inch touchscreen display as the new iPhone released in June of that year, allowing you to run apps and games. The first iPod Touch sold for $300.

“The iPod touch is a groundbreaking iPod,” Jobs said at the time.

The upgraded iPod Touch debuted a year later. The new devices were thinner and lighter and had access to the App Store. Apple called it “the funniest iPod we’ve ever made.”

By 2008, iPod sales had exploded. Apple sold 54.8 million units that year, a record high for the company.

However, over the next year, iPod sales as a whole began to slow. Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO at the time, said, “That’s to be expected, as we’re encroaching ourselves with the iPod Touch and iPhone.”

When Apple added front and rear cameras to the iPod Touch in 2010, the line between the iPod Touch and the iPhone became even more blurred. A year later, iPhone sales officially overtaken iPod sales.

Nevertheless, by 2012, Apple had sold 350 million units and redesigned its iPod lineup, including the iPod Touch.

iPod Touch was first available in five colors: blue, yellow, and pink. Apple has also added Siri, a smart assistant. Upgraded camera and display. And it makes devices thinner and lighter than ever before.

The iPod Touch has received a few upgrades since then (most recently in 2019), but the design has remained largely unchanged over the past decade.

Meanwhile, Apple is slowly getting rid of older versions of the iPod. The iPod Classic was discontinued in 2014, and the Nano and Shuffle were discontinued in 2017.

But the iPod touch stopped. Unlike their ancestors, because they were iOS devices, they could connect to Apple services like Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV Plus. Apple has made these services a major focus over the past few years, even replacing iTunes, its industry-changing music library, with its new streaming platform.

However, because the iPod Touch is similar to the iPhone, it is duplicated and is now about to become a part of technology history. Apple said customers will only be able to purchase the last remaining iPod, the iPod Touch.
