He said his heart is breaking for the Texas community. But he also used the moment to urge his fellow senators to take action. Murphy described the US government’s inaction after these incidents of gun violence as a “silent message of support.”
“I’m here to literally get on my hands and knees on this floor to beg my colleagues,” he said. “Find a way forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that reduce this likelihood. I understand that my Republican colleagues may disagree with everything I stand for, but a common denominator we can find. There is a place. There is a place where we can come to an agreement…”
He came to a conclusion. “What are we doing? Why are we here? What are we doing?”
