Startups and investors fueling hopes for “flying cars” could face a tough landing on many fronts.

Hundreds of companies, new companies and established airlines alike are developing these vehicles, also known as air taxis or eVTOLs (short for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing). Five such startups went public in the last 12 months. They are working to create a near future where taking a flying taxi will be an economically viable alternative to riding on the ground.
