It started with a clutch-par save, but it was equivalent to the third round of Tiger Woods in the 2022 PGA Championship. Ultimately hitting a 9-over-par 79, but the 15-time major champ collapsed mid-round and didn’t get any kind of momentum around the Southern Hills on Saturday.
After a great one over on the first five holes, Woods looked ready to face the cold and windy conditions of Tulsa, Oklahoma, despite the others on the field struggling. But soon everything will change.
The end started when the 46-year-old golf ball hit the penalty area when the wrong club fell off the tee on the par 3 6th hole. Finally tried a triple bogey. The mistake snowballed as Woods made a bogey on 6 of the next 7 holes.
He was on the brink of scoring the worst score of his major championship career. But, as they did at every competitive golf this year, Tiger continued to fight no matter the circumstances.
A long birdie on the par 4 15th hole, Woods finished 9 overs in rounds and 12 overs in the championship. Hitting a one-under on his last five holes, he avoided another entry into the dreaded “80s club” as he did only twice in his major championship career.
Woods’ 9-over-par 79 would be the third worst round of his major and the fifth worst round of his professional career.
Tiger currently sits at number 76 on the leaderboards, with only one name below his name. He will leave one of the first groups of the final round early Sunday morning, but Woods can still be trusted to fight to the end.
