LONDON (AP) — Tottenham have revived hopes of reaching the Champions League final by beating Arsenal 3-0 in the Premier League on Thursday.
Harry Kane scored two goals, including one from a penalty kick, and Heung-Min Son added one right after the first half, leaving Tottenham by one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, where center back Rob Holding was sent off in the 33rd inning, which was one point. -0.
With two games left for each team, the finish of the season for fifth-placed Tottenham seems easier than for Arsenal. Tottenham are facing two of the bottom four from Burnley and already relegated Norwich, but Arsenal must travel to Newcastle before their home game against Everton.
Arsenal were responsible for their own downfall in some ways, with defender Cedric Soares breaking in at the backpost for Heung-Min Son for a penalty kick from which Kane rolled a corner in the 22nd minute.
Holding, who had already been booked to pull Son Heung-min back, opted to stick out an elbow to block the Korean striker rather than follow Eric Dier’s ball past Arsenal’s defense.
Holdings received a second yellow card in the 33rd for touching the face of Heung-min Son who fell to the ground.
Arsenal’s situation worsened four minutes later, with Heung-Min Son taking a corner from the right, Rodrigo Bentancourt header and Kane heading home from the back post just a meter away.
Son Heung-min curled his third goal from inside the penalty area in the bottom of the 47th inning after being tackled by Kane trying to throw a shot from the turn to score one for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the race for the top scorer in the league.
Heung-Min Son has scored 10 goals in their last 8 league matches and has 21 goals in this campaign.
Arsenal’s disastrous evening ended with defender Gabriel trembling with a right hamstring injury. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s central defensive resources are expanding at the wrong time as Holding’s suspension and Ben White only fit enough to sit on the bench after a recent injury.
Manchester City and Liverpool are already confident of a place in the Champions League next season and third-placed Chelsea will also join, four points ahead of Arsenal and need a win in their remaining matches against Leicester and already relegated Watford.
That means Arsenal and Tottenham are fighting for the final and they have to go to the final day of the season.
