The UK says the latest sanctions target Vladimir Putin’s financial network, which includes his longtime girlfriend Alina Kabaeva, his ex-wife Lyudmila Ocheretnaya and cousins.
“We are exposing and targeting insidious networks that support Putin’s extravagant lifestyle and reinforce the vices within Putin,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement on Friday.
“Until Ukraine is victorious, we will continue to impose sanctions on anyone who aids or instigates Putin’s attack.”
A British Foreign Ministry statement describing Kabaeva said: “Alina Kabaeva, a retired Olympic gymnast. Kabaeva has emerged as the Chairman of the Board of National Media Group, Russia’s largest private media company. She is known to have close ties with Putin, and she previously served as deputy representative of the Russian Unity Party (Duma), which was led by Putin,” she said.
