When it comes to smart speakers, Apple has so far released a HomePod (announced in 2017) and a HomePod mini (announced in 2020), and there are rumors that we may get another device in the same series before the end of the year.
This was provided by a reputable Apple analyst. Ming-Chi GuoWho says the new model will appear in the last quarter of 2022 or the first quarter of 2023. The period is from October 2022 to March 2023.
Kuo doesn’t say if this is a full-size HomePod or a miniature version. Apple discontinued a larger version of the smart speaker in March of last year, which makes us think we could get a new HomePod mini. However, there is always a possibility that Apple will revert the original to an updated form.
Apple will release a new version of the HomePod in 4Q22-1Q23, and there may not be much innovation in the hardware design. Smart speakers are undoubtedly one of the essentials of the home ecosystem, but I think Apple is still finding ways to succeed in this market.May 20, 2022
Kuo hasn’t revealed much about what the next HomePod might bring, but he says “there may not be much innovation in hardware design.” That said, the new model will look similar to what we’ve seen previously at Apple.
That’s probably not surprising. There aren’t many ways to design a smart speaker, and the current HomePod aesthetic works well enough. But I’ve also heard rumors that Apple could work on a HomePod with a display connected.
Amazon and Google are of course already making smart speakers with integrated screens, but Apple isn’t ready to go that far in 2022 or 2023. It’s here on TechRadar.
Analysis: Apple needs better smart speakers
As Ming-Chi Kuo himself points out, smart speakers are “one of the essentials of the home ecosystem,” which means Apple will actually have to sell a HomePod or two. The company is still “figuring out” how to succeed with its smart home kit, Kuo says.
We agree with that assessment. The list of features we’d like to see on the HomePod 2 is quite extensive, this time looking forward to Bluetooth connectivity, access to more music services, and better performance from Siri. .
Siri has long lagged behind Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant in smart digital assistants. It’s not as extensive or intuitive as its competitors. And I very much prefer to use Apple services.
It’s a similar story when we talk more broadly about smart homes. Alexa and Google devices work on a lot more devices than Apple HomeKit. This is a drawback that Apple has to address to catch up.
