Henley reunited with the Dead Kennedys in 2001, performing with numerous other artists throughout his career, releasing solo albums, and remaining an early black icon in the punk rock scene. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea responded to the news with heartfelt homage. Dear companion, I miss you so much. Today is like a river of tears, but I will love you unconditionally for the rest of my life. The first time I saw him play with DK in ’81, it took my breath away. Power, spirit, stupidity. You have turned into my beloved companion. Very often of all kinds. We hugged each other’s backs and had a very happy time. I love you with all my being. You are the truest rocker and an important part of rhcp history. DHP in its place, you are always living in our souls, you are a wild man, you are a bearer of happiness, you are a man with a huge heart. I will always admire you. Peace and freedom from all that binds you.

Dead Kennedys was formed in San Francisco in June 1978 with artist Jello Biafra, guitarist East Sound Beam, bassist Klaus Flouride, and drummer Bruce ‘Ted’ Slesinger. After recording their first demo, Dead Kennedys released their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables in 1980. Slesinger left the band to pursue a career in architecture the following year, and DH Peligro performed thanks to Biafra on an SSI live show. DH Peligro helped Dead Kennedy evolve into a more solid hardcore punk sound. Using an aggressive and steady drumming style will help influence the wave of crossover thrash that follows.

Yesterday I heard the heartbreaking news that we lost an absolute legend. Dead Kennedys’ DH Peligro was one of the dumbest mfs in the world and I’m grateful to get to meet him.
Wherever he is, I hope he still brings chaos. pic.twitter.com/c5sJ9lUS4b
