What’s the ‘Smithfield Death Star’ as protesters rush at Nathan’s hot dog eating contest?

On Monday, Nathan’s hot dog eating contest was disrupted by many protesters, resulting in Joey Chestnut anchoring one of them to the ground. In addition, one of the destroyers was wearing a Darth Vader mask holding a sign that read ‘Reveal the Smithfield Death Star’.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What does ‘Smithfield Death Star’ mean?

Animal activists Scott Gilbertson, Robert Yamada and Josh Marxen stormed the stage to release an article bearing the words ‘Expose Smithfield Death Star’.

According to a report by Sporting News, the protesters were most likely referring to Smithfield Foods, an American food processing company that produces pork. The company is based in Smithfield, Virginia, and has previously carried news surrounding the controversy.

Protesters have taken a stand against the handling of pigs at the nation’s largest pig farm.

Agents were sent to the farm where the pigs were received from the factory. According to reports, they found many sick, dead and sick piglets lying in their mother’s feces. They also found several injured adult pigs.

In the past, PETA has issued statements condemning the company for animal cruelty.

According to VOX, Smithfield Foods also issued a statement claiming that it would make the meat more humane after the revelations of using pregnant crates on gilts.

Meanwhile, the ‘Star of Death’ on the sign is a reference to the sci-fi movie Star Wars in which a protester is wearing a Darth Vader mask.

Who won Nathan’s hot dog eating contest?

Joey Chestnut won the men’s division and Mickey Sudo won the women’s division.

Chestnut won the title last year and marked it as their 15th win.

As the protesters took to the stage, Chestnut immediately ran to and hung one of them around his neck.

Despite the hiccups, Chestnut ate 63 hot dogs and buns, leading the game and winning awards.

He also holds the record for eating 76 hot dogs. Still, he hasn’t broken his own record this year.

“It hurts, but I was there for a while,” the hot dog-eating champion told ESPN. I was ignoring it.’

The winners in both categories will each receive $10,000. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places are $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively.
