Kate Bush’s Parents: Robert Bush and Hannah

Kate Bush was born on July 30, 1958 in Bexleyheath, Kent, England. Her father, Robert Bush (1923-2006), worked as a physician and her mother, Hannah Daley (1926-75), was a housewife. Kate has two younger brothers, John and Paddy.

Both Kate’s parents were very musical. Her father played the piano and her mother always sang at home. Kate said that she started composing when she was 11 and it wasn’t long before she started playing the piano.

In 1968, at the age of 10, Kate auditioned and passed the Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts in London. She attended school for three years, during which time she appeared in several stage productions. In 1971, she left the academy to focus on music.

Kate’s first major public performance appeared in an episode of the 1977 British Music Awards, singing “The Man with the Child in His Eyes”, which she wrote when she was 13 years old. The song drew attention to Pink Floyd’s frontman, Roger Waters, who asked to sing the backing vocals on his album The Wall (1979).
