Nigerian influencer Jackie Aina is being criticized on social media for labeling one of her new candles Sòrò Sókè.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Jackie Aina’s Sòrò Sókè Controversy Explained

Jackie Aina, who recently turned 35, unveiled her new Owambe candle collection on August 5th.

For her new product, she collaborated with fashion designers Claude Kameni and FORVR Mood, a brand founded by Aina.

Nevertheless, the collection consists of four new fragrances: Sòrò Sókè, No Wahala, Soft Life and Spice Of Life.

As the word Sòrò Sókè is associated with controversial protests in Nigeria, this has caused a lot of drama for influential people. The term comes from the yoruban (a West African ethnic group) and means ‘speak’ or ‘don’t be silent’.

In 2017, young Nigerian youths gathered to protest the police brutality that led to the dissolution of the controversial Special Anti-Rift Squadron (SARS).

The online campaign used hashtags such as #EndSARS and #SòròSókè during the protests.

Therefore, many users criticized Aina for marketing her products using sensitive slogans.
