Why the electric Ford F-150 Lightning’s biggest feature is its amazing front trunk

  • Tested electric Ford F-150 Lightning in rural Texas.
  • All in all, it’s a nice truck, but the biggest feature is the front trunk, also called the trunk.
  • Lightning’s trunk is large and easily accessible, and provides a power outlet and USB port.

Ford’s new electric F-150 offers many new advantages over the company’s gas-powered trucks.

Despite its weight, the F-150 Lightning can reach 60 mph in just 4 seconds. The electricity from the huge battery pack can be shared with appliances, tailgate gear, or the owner’s home in case of a power outage.

Automatic backup power can be a lifesaver in an emergency, but it’s not something owners use every day. For better or worse, this isn’t a feature I’ve actually seen when testing Lightning for a few days in early May.

What I ended up using – and what I’m sure the Lightning’s best feature is – is the front trunk. Ford calls it the Mega Power Trunk, which is a very silly name for a very useful feature.

Like most modern electric vehicles, the basic structure of the F-150 Lightning looks like a giant electric skateboard. The motor is mounted down by the axle and the battery is on the ship. This means Ford can do fun things with all the space conventional engines don’t take up.

Open the Lightning’s “hood” and you’ll find plenty of cargo space, larger than the trunk of a Toyota Corolla. Of course, the truck offers plenty of storage space as-is. That’s the point. But pickups are generally quite weatherproof and lack lockable storage, and the frunk adds that.

It can carry a few carry-on bags and up to 400 pounds, as well as easy access.

The entire grill area rises to reveal a loading floor low enough for almost anyone to use. By comparison, another electric pickup, the Rivian R1T, has more of a conventional hood and must unload from above. It can be difficult for short people.

Imagine traveling with 4 people and having bikes or camping gear in bed. Even better if you have an extra trunk for bags and small items. Or, some owners want to keep things permanently in their trucks but don’t want them exposed on the bed.

And funk offers other cool additions.

Additional storage space under the floor with drain holes allows the owner to fill the trunk with ice or lower the hose. Removable panels also serve as partitions to prevent food from sliding. There are several hooks and tie points to hold the cargo in place.

The aforementioned “Mega Power” is built into Frank’s wall in the form of a USB port and outlet, opening up possibilities like a charging device or power tool on the go.

Zero tailpipe emissions and quick acceleration are both great. But I could see that Lightning’s candor was a factor pushing more hesitant buyers to the edge. And while you’ll immediately see just how useful the frunk is, future Lightning owners will certainly come up with innovative uses that no one expected.
