President Zelensky Meets with US Officials

Worldwide sanctions on President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine have created serious logistical problems for Russia, Transport Minister Vitali Saveliev said.

Russia’s supply chain is at risk of collapse, the former Aeroflot CEO suggested. This is the result of harsh economic sanctions in many Western countries.

When he visited the Astrakhan region of southern Russia, he told reporters: And we have to find new logistics aisles.”

The Kremlin said it hopes that the north-south traffic corridor passing through Astrakhan, the Caspian port on the Volga, Oliya on the Volga-Caspian Canal, and Makhachkala on the Caspian Sea, will help alleviate the problem.

Corridors are transit routes for the transport of goods between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe by ship, rail and road.

Russia’s bombardment of Ukrainian forces

Russia has launched airstrikes and shelling in hundreds of places in eastern and southern Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the headquarters, the military and the ammunition depot were targeted.

The air-launched missiles hit three command centers, 13 areas where the military and Ukrainian military equipment were assembled, and four ammunition depots in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, a spokeswoman said.

He added that in southern Ukraine, Russian rockets and artillery attacked 583 areas, including an electronic warfare base and a mobile anti-drone system, near the settlement of Hannivka, about 100 km northeast of the city of Mykolev.

Ukraine, Azovstal defender ‘will fight to return’

Concerns are mounting over Ukrainian troops detained in Russia after leaving the Mariupol steelworks, and Kyiv has vowed to “fight” for their return.

The fighters were trapped at the Azovstal plant in harsh conditions for several months while the city was under siege.

Denis Pushilin, the pro-Kremlin head of the separatist-controlled Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, said 2,439 people were detained. He said on Russian TV that the figure included some foreigners, but did not provide details.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released videos of Ukrainian soldiers being detained after the military announced that the last struts had been removed from an underground tunnel at a steel plant.

The warrior’s family were granted the rights of prisoner of war and eventually begged to return to Ukraine.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said on Saturday that Ukraine will fight for the return of all of them.

A bus convoy guarded by Russian armored vehicles left the factory on Friday. At least some Ukrainians have been transferred to former prisons, while Russian authorities say others are in hospitals.

Among the defenders of the plant were members of the Azov regiment. The neo-Nazi ties to the far-right included in its ranks were used by the Kremlin to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine “repels 4 airstrikes in Sebedonetsk”

Russian forces attempted to advance from all directions against Sevedonetsk in eastern Ukraine, but Ukrainian forces repulsed them, local officials said.

Serhii Haidai, the head of the Luhansk district, wrote on Telegram:

“But they continued to bombard residential areas with mortars and artillery. Almost all villages and villages under Ukrainian control have been affected.”

Haidai also wrote that Russian forces damaged the bridge through which humanitarian goods were delivered to the area and people were evacuated.

Russia also added that it was “intentionally destroying multidisciplinary hospitals.”

“The seven-story building has actually already become a four-story building. There are three doctors working until the end,” he said.

Mariupol faces health and hygiene ‘catastrophe’

Mayor Mariupol said Saturday they are facing a health and sanitation “disaster” due to breakdowns in sewer systems, as well as mass burials in shallow pits across the ruined city.

Vadim Boychenko said summer rain risks polluting water sources as they pressure Russian troops to allow residents to safely leave the city.

“Besides the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the (Russia) occupants and collaborators, the city is on the verge of an outbreak of an epidemic,” he said in the messaging app Telegram.

Earlier this week, Russia claimed full control of Mariupol.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense released a video on Saturday of the detention of the Russian military’s commander of the 36th Special Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy, Serkh Volinsky, who was one of the main units defending the Azov steel plant.

Zelensky says Donbas’s situation is ‘very difficult’.

Ukrainian forces report fierce fighting is taking place in most of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

“The situation in Donbass is very difficult,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address on Saturday night.

“As before, the Russian army is trying to attack Sloviansk and Sievierodonetsk.”

He said the Ukrainian forces were putting their offensive on hold “every day”.

Sievierodonetsk is the main Ukrainian-controlled city in the Luhansk region, while Sloviansk in the Donetsk region is very important to Russia’s goal of occupying all of eastern Ukraine.
